In the World Cup final on Sunday, Argentina’s offensive efforts were as limited as their shots on goal.
Spain secured their first World Cup title since 2010 with a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina, but not before facing an intense reaction from Leandro Paredes at MetLife Stadium.
Following the final whistle, a scuffle erupted, with Paredes throwing a punch at Spanish defender Eric Garcia.
This chaos unfolded when Paredes lunged at Garcia, striking him in the throat and bringing him down. In the heat of the moment, he also shoved Spanish midfielder Gabi, escalating the conflict.
After a short while, order was restored, and Spain was able to celebrate their championship.
Paredes received a red card for his actions, which took place right in front of assistant referee Tomas Kranczynik and Argentina’s coach.
Soccer analyst Alan Shearer commented on the situation live, noting that Paredes was “throwing two or three haymakers in someone’s face.” He assessed the incident, pointing out that while losing is tough, there are appropriate ways to handle it. “The reaction after the final whistle was terrible,” he added.
The whole affair is likely to catch the eye of FIFA’s disciplinary committee, and Paredes may face a suspension longer than the standard one-match ban.
Throughout the match, Argentina found it difficult to create opportunities, managing only two shots on target. They also struggled to assert themselves in the box, registering just eight touches compared to Spain’s 31.
The defeat hampered Argentina’s hopes of back-to-back World Cup victories, following their win in Qatar last year.
Spain’s defense effectively neutralized Argentina’s superstar, Lionel Messi, who did not manage a single shot during the game.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente commented on their strategy, saying, “In our game plan, the first idea was to keep out not just Messi but other players as well. We wanted to keep them away from the goal… the attitude of the players was crucial. We knew this was the final, and we wanted to give everything for this match.”
