Aric Almirola criticizes Austin Hill for the crash in the NASCAR Xfinity Series

NASCAR Incident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

This past Saturday at the Pennzoil 250 in Indianapolis, NASCAR XFINITY series drivers Austin Hill and Aric Almirola found themselves in a rather chaotic situation on the track.

As the race approached the ten-lap mark, Almirola came up from behind Hill and made contact, which sent Hill sliding across the track. He attempted to maneuver around Hill, but in the process, Hill veered down and spun Almirola into the wall. It was quite a dramatic scene.

Almirola slammed into the wall, while Hill ended up spinning onto the grass before also hitting the wall. Following this, Hill received a five-lap penalty for his actions, which he denied were intentional, telling his team over the radio that it wasn’t on purpose.

Almirola, however, had a different viewpoint. After being released from the infield care center, he firmly stated, “It was definitely intentional. He blocked me three times. Finally loosened him at turn three. He caused damage to the nose, so he was really slow in the corner. That was the time to go. The leader was starting to pull away, so we had to act.”

Miraculously, Almirola was not hurt in the crash, but he mentioned that the violent impact reminded him of a serious accident he had back in 2017, where he broke his back.

He described the crash as one of the hardest hits of his career, saying, “It was violent. The impact felt very similar to when I broke my back. I’m definitely interested in analyzing the black box data from that incident.”

On his side, Hill explained to his team that he couldn’t keep control of his car because it was loose. Team owner Richard Childress came to Hill’s defense, suggesting that the actions taken against him weren’t warranted, stating, “We’re a blue-collar team. They always give us trouble.”

In the end, Connor Zilish claimed victory in the race.
