Arkansas Lottery Players Claim Historic Powerball Jackpot

Players in Arkansas have made headlines by claiming a staggering $1.82 billion Powerball ticket, marking the second-largest jackpot in the game’s history. However, the identities of the winners are currently unknown.

The fortunate winner decided to stay anonymous, opting for a lump sum cash payout of $834.9 million before taxes, as announced by the Arkansas Lottery on Thursday.

The winning numbers drawn were 4, 25, 31, 52, 59, and the Powerball number was 19.

This monumental win occurred at a Murphy USA gas station in Cabot, Arkansas, a location roughly 40 miles northeast of Little Rock. The store received a $50,000 commission for selling the ticket.

For those curious about the prize options, if the winner decided to take the full $1.82 billion, they would receive the amount in 30 payments stretched over 29 years. Arkansas law allows jackpot winners of $500,000 or more to keep their identities private for three years after claiming their prize.

“While everyone was eagerly waiting for the winner to step forward, we’re glad they took the time to seek legal and financial advice, as we suggested. We’re also excited the winner is from Arkansas,” shared State Lottery Executive Director Sharon Strong.

This life-changing prize ranks as the second-largest jackpot ever, following California resident Edwin Castro’s win of $2.04 billion in November 2022.

Interestingly, this win also marks the end of a 47-drawing dry spell for Powerball without a jackpot winner.

In a somewhat ironic twist, another player from Virginia came close to that monumental win. Jeffrey Dimond of Spotsylvania County picked the easy option at a nearby Wawa, matching five of the six numbers, including the Powerball. His prize was a respectable $100,000 after matching four numbers and the Powerball but pales in comparison to the grand prize.

After the Christmas Eve drawing, the Powerball was reset to $20 million, and by Wednesday night, it had already climbed to $209 million.

A North Carolina lottery player also grabbed a multi-million dollar prize by matching all six numbers in a recent drawing. The winning numbers were 11, 26, 27, 53, 55, with the Powerball number being 12. The ticket was sold at West 10th Mart situated in Roanoke Rapids, just eight miles from the Virginia state line.

The winner from North Carolina has 180 days to collect their prize, with the option to choose between receiving $209.3 million over 29 years or a one-time payment of $95.3 million.
