Standoff on Texas Highway Ends with Surrender
An armed woman caused significant traffic disruptions on a busy Texas highway on Thursday afternoon, leading to a lengthy standoff with law enforcement.
Deputies from four Harris County Constables responded after receiving reports about the woman, who was armed and had been involved in a crash on I-45 South in Spring, Texas. Thankfully, neither she nor the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries.
Following the incident, the woman exited her vehicle, set up a lawn chair, and sat down in the middle of the road. Authorities noted that she refused to drop her handgun.
“She held it against her face, her throat… it made it quite challenging for us to approach her,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez during a press conference.
Gonzalez mentioned that the situation seemed to indicate possible suicidal thoughts from the woman, highlighting the difficulties of managing such sensitive circumstances. He shared that she has a history of mental illness, which complicated the negotiations.
For about five hours, the standoff closed traffic in both directions. Law enforcement repeatedly tried to talk her down, which, inevitably, increased backups on the highway.
Members of the Crisis Intervention Response Team were sent to the scene, and the woman’s daughter arrived as well. “We allowed her to speak to her daughter, reassuring her that everything was okay,” Gonzalez explained.
It was crucial for the authorities to handle the situation carefully. Once the woman recognized her daughter’s presence and that she was safe, it alleviated some tension.
Ultimately, the woman surrendered and was taken into custody. She was then transported to a hospital for evaluation.
