Armorer in cinematographer’s death found guilty and freed from prison

Santa Fe, New Mexico – Hannah Gutierrez Reid, convicted of involuntary manslaughter, has been released from prison while still wearing gear from the “Rust” film set.

In April 2024, she was sentenced to 18 months following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Hutchins tragically lost her life when actor Alec Baldwin discharged a firearm on the “Rust” set in October 2021. The judge found that Gutierrez Reid had mishandled ammunition, contributing to this accidental death.

The New Mexico Department of Corrections confirmed her release on Friday, also noting that she will be on probation in Arizona.

Additionally, Gutierrez Reid will be under supervision as part of her probation, stemming from a separate charge related to illegally bringing a firearm into a licensed liquor establishment.

This incident occurred while Baldwin, both the lead actor and a producer of “Rust,” was rehearsing a scene where he aimed a gun at Hutchins, resulting in her death and injuries to Joel Sousa.

Gutierrez Reid has filed an appeal regarding her conviction, which is still pending in a higher court. The judge previously cleared her of claims that she tampered with evidence during the investigation into the film.

Prosecutors accused the crew of improperly bringing live ammunition onto the set and not adhering to essential firearm safety protocols.

Weeks before filming for “Rust” commenced, Gutierrez Reid also carried a firearm into a bar in downtown Santa Fe, where firearms were prohibited.

Her parole terms include a mental health evaluation and restrictions on firearm possession.

Charges against Baldwin for involuntary manslaughter were dismissed last year, amidst allegations that law enforcement withheld evidence from his defense team.

Filming for “Rust” has since been completed in Montana, and the movie was released in theaters this month.
