US Army Honors Soldiers for Act of Bravery
On Thursday, the US Army paid tribute to six unarmed soldiers who confronted gunmen during a shooting at Fort Stewart, believing their actions saved lives in a chaotic situation.
Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll presented the Medal of Merit Service to First Sergeant Joshua Arnold, Master Sergeant Justin Thomas, Sergeant Staff Melissa Taylor, Sergeant Robert Pacheco, Sergeant Aaron Turner, and Sergeant Yves Rodarte. These soldiers managed to subdue the suspect and assist the injured, as reported by ABC News.
Driscoll praised their bravery, stating, “They embody all the good things about American soldiers. Under fire, they charged into danger, subdued the attackers, and looked after their fellow soldiers. Their actions made all the difference.”
He expressed gratitude for their quick response, claiming medical personnel indicated their efforts directly contributed to saving lives. “I can tell you from the doctor, you saved lives yesterday, and we are immensely grateful,” he noted. “What you’ve gone through is harsh, but we’re so proud of you.”
In addition to suppressing the gunmen, Thomas and Turner were recognized for their bravery, while the other recipients were acknowledged for their efforts in providing aid to those injured during the incident.
Brigadier General John Levas also commended the soldiers, highlighting that as soon as the shooter was identified, soldiers acted without hesitation, tackling the suspect and immediately administering first aid to the wounded.
The service medal of merit is awarded to members of the United States military who distinguish themselves through extraordinary service or achievements.
Autologistics Sergeant Coonrius Radford was reported injured during the shooting on Wednesday but is expected to recover, according to USA Today.
Radford was apprehended after being restrained by fellow soldiers.
Fort Stewart, located in Hinesville, Georgia, is one of the Army’s principal armor training and deployment sites.
