Schwarzenegger Discusses His Political Affiliation on ‘Real Time’

During a recent appearance on “Real Time,” actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed whether he still identifies as a Republican. This came after host Bill Maher inquired about the relevance of Schwarzenegger’s reasons for joining the party in today’s political landscape.

Maher posed questions about the current state of the Republican Party, wondering if it still embodies what Schwarzenegger once admired. The former governor, who held office from 2003 to 2011, acknowledged that the party has undergone significant changes but remained firm in his traditional values.

Schwarzenegger began by highlighting notable figures in Republican history, such as Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. “I’m a Republican like Lincoln, who fought to abolish slavery and championed the rights of black citizens,” he asserted. He recognized that the party has shifted over time, yet stressed the importance of reclaiming its foundational philosophy.

Maher reminisced about Schwarzenegger’s impactful speech at the Republican National Convention in 2004, where he reflected on his experiences with socialism. The discussion shifted to how Schwarzenegger, who grew up in Austria during its occupation by Russia, perceived American political ideologies upon arriving in the U.S.

Addressing contemporary politics, Schwarzenegger emphasized the need for unity in leadership. He stated, “It’s crucial to serve the people rather than the political party,” recalling moments when he worked closely with Democrats in Sacramento. He expressed that cooperation leads to better solutions: “When Republican and Democratic minds come together, we can achieve real progress.”

Nonetheless, Maher pointed out that California’s political climate might differ from the rest of the nation, suggesting that a moderate Republican could fare well in the state. Schwarzenegger replied that the focus should be on communication and understanding rather than division. He reiterated the need for constructive discussions, stating, “People crave dialogue rather than hate.”

Schwarzenegger also voiced his support for California’s independent redistricting commission, which is facing challenges under Governor Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 related to the ongoing redistricting process. Newsom’s measure aims to compel state legislatures to redraw maps in response to changes made in Republican-led states, showcasing the ongoing tensions in California’s political landscape.
