Schwarzenegger Opposes Newsom’s Redistricting Plan
Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is voicing strong opposition to Governor Gavin Newsom’s new constituency plan, which some have likened to gerrymandering. Schwarzenegger has been actively involved in efforts to contest this initiative.
In his tenure, Schwarzenegger had previously supported nonpartisan changes to constituency mapping, labeling gerrymandering as “evil.” He emphasizes that these practices undermine democratic principles by allowing politicians to interfere with electoral boundaries.
As a former Hollywood star and famed for his role as the cyborg assassin in “The Terminator,” Schwarzenegger claims he’s committed to fighting against the current Democratic governor’s proposals for redistricting.
In late July, Texas GOP lawmakers unveiled a plan for new congressional districts. In response, California Democrats are proposing changes to their maps through special elections aimed at diminishing Republican influence.
Schwarzenegger stands with other Republicans in California against these strategies, making his views known in a recent post on X. In the post, he shared images of himself wearing a shirt with provocative statements, reflecting his commitment to the battle against gerrymandering.
This isn’t Schwarzenegger’s first foray into the anti-gerrymandering space. Earlier this year, his spokesman highlighted Schwarzenegger’s long-standing battle against gerrymandering, suggesting that the former governor believes it to be detrimental regardless of which party is involved.
“Governor Schwarzenegger has a 20-year history of fighting against gerrymandering, taking the power back from politicians and returning it to the people,” the spokesman said. He firmly believes that gerrymandering should be opposed no matter who practices it.
Schwarzenegger has consistently backed California’s independent district boards, which are viewed as a benchmark for creating fair legislative maps. Additionally, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is also rallying against the Democrats’ initiatives, reportedly leading efforts to raise $100 million aimed at combating gerrymandering laws.
