Aroldis Chapman Extends Contract with Red Sox

Aroldis Chapman, the dynamic left-handed reliever, is set to extend his time with the Red Sox through the 2026 season, according to journalist Francys Romero. This agreement, valued at $13 million, also includes a mutual option for 2027, as noted by MassLive.

After a stint with the Pirates last season, Chapman signed a one-year contract worth $1.75 million with Boston. It seems to have paid off for both parties, as he boasts a remarkable 1.04 ERA, with 26 saves and 74 strikeouts over 52 innings, leading to his eighth career All-Star selection. Pretty impressive, right?

His ERA+ of 401 is the best in his career, which—in all honesty—is kind of mind-blowing. Even at 37 years old, his average fastball speed sits in the 98th percentile at 98.9 mph. That’s something not everyone achieves, especially at that age.

Chapman has also shown exceptional control over his 16-year career, maintaining a whip of 0.67 and averaging just 2.4 walks per nine innings. This performance has even exceeded the expectations of the Red Sox front office.

Reflecting on his success, a member of the team’s management shared, “I try to be careful saying anyone exceeded expectations. It sounds like we weren’t hopeful, but we indeed had high expectations, and he’s outdone them.” It’s a nice touch to see that recognition for his contributions beyond just numbers.

During his time with the Yankees, Chapman made three All-Star appearances, but it was his last season there that was particularly noteworthy. There were certainly highs and lows, as he mentioned back in June after a match against New York.

Now, with Boston in line for a postseason chance, Chapman—having already secured a World Series ring with the Rangers in 2023—looks to add more accolades to his career.
