On Saturday afternoon, around 100 deceased cats were discovered at a residence in Long Island after firefighters were alerted to a strong odor emanating from the location, as reported by Suffolk County authorities.
Emergency responders arrived at approximately 3 PM to what can only be described as a disturbing scene. The bodies of the cats were found both in a freezer and scattered throughout the home in Bohemia, according to the local fire station.
Initially, the Suffolk County SPCA reported a suspected ammonia leak shortly before 2 PM, indicating that nearly 100 dead cats were at the home on Westminster Drive.
Details regarding the exact number of cats or the current occupants of the home were not immediately available.
The residence has been noted for its hazardous ammonia levels, drawing criticism for its condition.
In photographs shared later, several live cats could be seen peering out of the windows as authorities continued their investigations.
Local agencies, including the Islip Town Hazmat team, SPCA, fire services, police, and building inspectors, have all converged on the scene as inquiries continue.
As of now, the SPCA has yet to provide any further comments.
