Now then! Sometimes, a contest is of such obvious quality that it’s almost banal to say so, and that’s exactly what’s waiting for us at Meadow Park this afternoon.

Arsenal have had a spotty start to the season, third in the league, binned from the Champions League at the qualifying stage and, most recently, beaten from in front by West Ham. But in Jonas Eidevall they have one of the smartest coaches around, and now he has Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema all available it won’t be long before his side are at full power – and when they are, the rest best watch out.

City, though, have improved significantly following last season’s disappointing return, second in the table and well-placed to regain their Champions League spot with a title tilt to boot. The combination of the country’s most prolific front-line – Chloe Kelly, Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw have gelled beautifully – and most miserly defence – eight goals conceded in 13 league games – make them a serious proposition for anyone, and they arrive at this game chasing a 10th consecutive victory.

important events

When I started this blog, I never thought I would say this. But I like the city here. They find it easier to score and prevent their opponents from scoring, but more than that, they have a more consistent style. Arsenal, on the other hand, are still searching for form and confidence, and although they have the means to win, City look more prepared to take control of the game.

Arsenal, on the other hand, They may be looking to play against Russo, but without Miedema they may lack a creative player and have struggled to score points this season. I need something from Mead today.

Where can I find the game? My guess is that City intend to play through Hasegawa, with Kelly looking to attack inside the box and Hemp keeping his width. I think the full-backs will also move forward and the attackers will be looking for spaces behind and outside Arsenal’s centre-backs.

Good news for the City. Not terrible news for Arsenal.

Vivian Miedema has a mild inflammation in her knee. Arsenal are hoping she will be back in the Cup QF on Wednesday or against Manchester on Saturday. #afc

Meanwhile, Citi makes two changes: At the back, Kaspresi replaces Kendi, and in midfield, Coombs replaces Angeldahl.

There’s a lot to think about about the Arsenal XI. Idevall will probably be without Miedema due to injury and we’ll see what happens soon, but I think Viktoria Perova will play behind Alessia Russo and Kyla Cooney-Cross will replace her. I imagine it will come in as a double pivot. Otherwise, the excellent Katie McCabe returns at left-back in place of Steph Catley.

Let’s make some teams…

Arsenal (4-2-3-1): D’Angelo. Fox, Wabben-Moy, Williamson, McCabe. Marnham, Cooney Cross. Mead, Perova, Ford. Russo. sub: Ginsberger, Williams, Catley, Codina, Waltie, Little, Lacasse, Blackstenius.

Manchester City (4-3-3): Keating. Casparigi, Aleizandri, Greenwood, Uabi. Coombs, Hasegawa, Park. Kelly, Shaw, Hemp. sub: McIver, Stokes, Fowler, Morgan, Mace, Kennedy, Angeldahl.

Update date and time

preamble

Now! Sometimes contests are of such an obvious quality that it’s almost trite to say so, and that’s exactly what awaits us at Meadow Park this afternoon.

Arsenal have had a shaky start to the season, finishing third in the league, being eliminated in the Champions League in the qualifying stages, and recently suffered a come-from-behind defeat to West Ham. But with one of the smartest coaches in Jonas Aidevall and now he has Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Vivian Miedema, it won’t be long until the team is at full strength. And when they are at full power, the rest of the team will be the best watchdog.

However, City have vastly improved since last season’s disappointing return and are now second in the table, back into the Champions League and well placed to win the title. The most prolific front line combination in the country – Chloe Kelly, Lauren Hemp and Khadijah Shaw blending beautifully together, and the stingiest defense – eight goals conceded in 13 league games – makes them a serious proposition for anyone. They will aim for their 10th consecutive victory to reach this match.

This is going to be great.
