Czech Authorities Probe Arson at Weapons Factory as Potential Terrorism
Czech officials are looking into a suspected arson attack on a weapons factory in Pardubice, treating it as a potential act of terrorism. This comes after a group claimed responsibility, pointing to the company’s connections with Israel.
On Friday, the Elvit Systems facility in Pardubice caught fire, and investigators believe the incident was set intentionally. The company, known for producing drones and military technology, stated they have ended their relationship with Israel and are no longer manufacturing drones for the Israel Defense Forces.
Despite this, a group identifying itself as the “Earthquakes” took credit for the incident, emphasizing the company’s links to Israel and hinting at possible pro-Palestinian or pro-Iranian motivations, as reported by Czech Daily.
The group stated, “We are an internationalist underground network targeting strategic locations of importance to Zionist entities.” They further described Elbit Systems as foundational to the Israeli military, claiming the company has supplied the majority of weapons used by Israel in its operations against Iran and Palestine.
There are suggestions that the attack might be a false flag operation, directed at a factory accused of supplying drones to Ukraine.
Jan Charbert, an expert on extremism at Charles University in Prague, mentioned the attackers could be genuine pro-Palestinian extremists, Iranian-affiliated terrorists, or even pro-Russian operatives. He noted, “For this type of attack, it makes sense to target the company manufacturing drones that are shipped to Ukraine.”
Terrorism scholar Ordořich Breš remarked that it’s all still speculative. He noted, “We have had incidents of arson in the Czech Republic before, where it seemed like a hybrid threat from the Russian Federation was involved. There have also been similar incidents in other European nations linked to leftist groups.”
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš addressed the attack, stating, “Security agencies are on the case, and an investigation is underway. We’ve implemented several measures. Since this occurred at a private company, it’s crucial to send a message to all defense manufacturers to enhance their security. The premises of the targeted company were not secure.”
