Arrest Made in Connection with Pacific Palisades Fire
Jonathan Rinderknecht, the suspected arsonist linked to the destructive Pacific Palisades fire earlier this year, reportedly burned a Bible prior to allegedly starting the fire that resulted in over 6,000 homes lost and claimed 12 lives.
According to investigators, Rinderknecht revealed to family members that he had burned a Bible months before the devastating incident. He also allegedly mentioned this in a conversation on ChatGPT.
“I literally burned the Bible I had. It felt amazing. It felt so liberating,” he is quoted as saying in a digital exchange.
Authorities quickly identified Rinderknecht as a suspect and interviewed him by January 24, just a week before the fire was fully extinguished. Surveillance footage captured Rinderknecht and his vehicle near the location during the time of the blaze. Further phone records placed him at the scene without anyone else present.
Additionally, Rinderknecht allegedly donated $2 to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.
The 29-year-old was apprehended in Florida, and reports indicate he recorded a video of firefighters battling the blaze on his cellphone.
Officials from the Justice Department announced that both Jonathan Rinderknecht and another individual from Melbourne, Florida, were taken into custody.
Evidence retrieved from the suspect’s digital devices included images he created on ChatGPT that depicted a burning city.
“While we cannot undo the damage and destruction caused, we hope that his arrest and indictment will provide some sense of justice to the victims of this terrible tragedy,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Esairi at a recent press conference.
The Eaton Fire erupted the same day in the Pasadena and Altadena regions, resulting in another 19 fatalities and the destruction of around 9,400 structures. No arrests have been made related to that fire, and its cause remains uncertain, although local reports suggest sparks from an electrical tower by Edison, Southern California may be responsible.
