Rangers Struggles Continue as Scoring Drought Deepens

The Rangers are facing a significant scoring issue this season, with the fewest goals of any team and the worst power play performance to match.

Given their ongoing offensive difficulties—especially at home—the upcoming game in Detroit might not be as painful for them.

Artemi Panarin, the talented forward, has become a symbol of this scoring slump. He began the season well with seven points (two goals, five assists) in the first eight games, but he’s gone cold, failing to register any points in the last six games.

Panarin had a prime opportunity to score early on in Tuesday’s match against the Hurricanes, but he couldn’t capitalize. Despite this rough patch, he’s still been getting chances, racking up 22 shots during his scoreless streak and 19 in his first seven games.

Coach Mike Sullivan commented on Panarin’s situation, indicating that he doesn’t plan to significantly alter the player’s approach. Sullivan sees Panarin as an excellent player who has the ability to find the back of the net.

“From my experience coaching players of his caliber, sometimes you have to just let them be,” Sullivan shared recently. “We do offer observations, but those elite players often understand the game differently. It’s vital to allow them to follow their instincts.”

This is particularly relevant for a player who once set a career-high of 49 goals just two seasons back and scored 37 the previous year.

Interestingly, as he approaches free agency, Panarin’s shooting percentage has drastically fallen from a career average of 14.5% to a mere 4.9% this season.

Currently, he’s stuck in a six-game scoring drought, a stark contrast to his earlier quick scoring bursts.

However, there’s still room for hope. Last season, Panarin also experienced stretches of six games without a point, yet he managed to grab a few assists during those times, which he hasn’t done in this current stint.

When asked about the team’s offensive struggles, Panarin simply stated, “It’s about putting the puck in the net.”

He did begin the preseason with an upper-body injury, and Sullivan thinks he might still be adjusting to the flow of the game.

Sullivan emphasizes the importance of Panarin trusting his instincts, noting that this mindset leads to his best performances.

Despite the Rangers’ woes, goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been impressive at times, allowing only two goals or fewer in five of their games, including the recent loss to Carolina. Unfortunately, the absence of scoring has overshadowed some of his strong outings.
