Artemis II crew finishes last tasks, launch team now in charge of countdown to takeoff

NASA’s Artemis II Mission Set for Launch

Update at 3:13 PM: NASA announced that the closeout crew for the Artemis II mission, marking the first manned trip around the moon in over five decades, has finished final tasks leaving the spacecraft “sealed and ready for flight.” Responsibility now shifts to the launch control team for the countdown as the spacecraft has been fully configured.

Additionally, engineers looked into a sensor within the launch abort system that was showing unexpectedly high temperatures. It is thought to be an issue with instrumentation, and NASA assures it won’t impact today’s launch. The weather appears to be favorable, with a launch readiness increase to 90%.

Latest Updates

Update at 2:35 PM: NASA mentioned that engineers have addressed a communication problem with the flight termination system just about an hour prior to the scheduled launch. This system is crucial as it allows for safe destruction of the rocket if it strays off course during launch.

The space agency stated, “Without assurance that this system would work if needed, today’s launch would be no-go. However, engineers have devised a way to verify the system and are currently preparing to test this solution.”

A confidence test was carried out to ensure everything is set for the launch, along with the closure of the launch abort system hatch to confirm the spacecraft is ready for flight.

Countdown to Launch

At 10:59 AM, NASA proclaimed that the Artemis II rocket was scheduled to launch on Wednesday evening from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking an important return of manned missions around the moon.

“Just moments ago, NASA’s Artemis II flight crew began the walk that every NASA astronaut has made since Apollo 7 in 1968,” according to a statement from the agency.

The astronauts received a final weather review, with officials indicating 80% favorable conditions for the launch.

This four-member crew will embark on a 10-day mission, flying by the moon and anticipated to conclude with a splashdown near California.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) shared thoughts on social media on Wednesday, expressing prayers for the crew’s safety and the success of the mission, saying, “Americans are watching proudly as our Golden Age reaches new heights!”

Johnson recently hosted the astronauts at a past State of the Union address.

The White House also commented on the mission, emphasizing that Artemis II is a venture for all humanity. This mission follows the unmanned Artemis I mission completed in 2022 and will pave the way for future moon explorations.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has discussed plans to expedite launches and prepare for landing astronauts on the moon by 2028, with a vision to establish a lunar base in alignment with future Mars travel.

“What an exciting day for American space dominance,” Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy articulated on social media on Wednesday. “Artemis II is going around the moon and beyond. What we learn here is going to get us to Mars! And it all begins today.”
