Artemis II rocket set to launch today, the first crewed mission to orbit the moon in more than 50 years

Nasa’s Artemis II Launch Scheduled

Nasa is set to launch its Artemis II rocket on Wednesday evening at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This mission is particularly significant—it’s the first manned journey around the moon in over 50 years.

“Just moments ago, NASA’s Artemis II flight crew began the walk that every NASA astronaut has made since Apollo 7 in 1968,” the space agency noted.

According to NASA, the crew received the latest weather briefings, with officials reporting an 80% chance of favorable conditions for the launch.

This four-person team will embark on a 10-day mission, which includes a flyby of the moon, and is expected to conclude with a splashdown off the California coast.

House Speaker Mike Johnson shared his thoughts on X, expressing his prayers for the safety and success of the Artemis II crew and NASA.

“Americans are watching proudly as our Golden Age reaches new heights!” he remarked.

Earlier this year, Johnson also had the chance to host the astronauts during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

The White House joined the conversation, emphasizing that Artemis II represents a mission for all humanity.

This mission follows the unmanned Artemis I mission in 2022 and serves as a stepping stone for future lunar endeavors. Recently, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman discussed plans to speed up future launches, aiming to land astronauts on the moon by 2028 and develop a lunar base in line with the president’s vision—preparing for ambitious journeys to Mars.

“What an exciting day for American space dominance,” Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said on X. He noted, “Artemis II is going around the moon and beyond. What we learn here is going to get us to Mars. And it all begins today.”
