Aryna Sabalenka reacts strongly to the 'testosterone' tennis controversy

Aryna Sabalenka Responds to Marta Kostyuk’s Comments

Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka is addressing more than just headlines with bikini photos. During a recent appearance on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” she discussed remarks made by fellow player Marta Kostyuk in an October interview. At that time, a question about whether Sabalenka and Iga Światek had been “blackmailed” sparked quite a bit of discussion.

It’s amusing, honestly, that we even focus on what Kostyuk says, but it seems to me that all the talk is just… excuses, Sabalenka remarked. It’s kind of funny; she’s a strong athlete—probably has more muscle than I do. She appears healthy and fit, and I’m not sure that’s all that’s held her back in matches against other top players.

Kostyuk, ranking 26th globally, shared her thoughts at the Wuhan Open regarding the challenges of competing against elite players like Sabalenka, 27, and 24-year-old Światek.

“Honestly, when I faced Iga, I wasn’t prepared at all,” the 23-year-old said. “It’s been over a year since I played her. As for Aryna, I really don’t know. These players are physically different—taller and stronger. Some have higher testosterone levels, which can really impact performance. I know some excellent players who have those high levels, and it’s clear how that advantages their game.”

Kostyuk continued, “I’m working hard to compete using my tennis skills, but I need to push myself more than they do just to score points. I have to run harder, really. It’s not simply about hitting the ball with power; you can’t just magically become bigger or taller. So, I’m figuring out how to give it everything I’ve got. On the court, I know I appear smaller, and that’s a real challenge for me. I’m constantly thinking about how to improve against them.”

At around the same time Kostyuk’s comments gained traction, Sabalenka, who bested Kostyuk twice in 2025, shared a bikini snapshot, leading to speculation about whether it was a subtle response to the situation.

“I just wanted her to see the real me,” Sabalenka explained to Piers Morgan this week.

A follow-up article from Tennis365 mentioned that while Kostyuk’s opinions were a sincere reflection of her experiences, they were misinterpreted to suggest criticism aimed at her opponents, which wasn’t her intention. The publication emphasized its commitment to presenting tennis positively and hopes this clarification will resolve the controversy surrounding Kostyuk’s words.
