Aryna Sabalenka's intense exchange with Amanda Anisimova at Wimbledon

There was a bit of tension in the air during the Wimbledon semi-finals when top seed Alina Sabalenka faced Amanda Anisimova. The match took a dramatic turn, especially in the final moments.

After Anisimova pulled ahead to a 5-2 lead in the third set, there seemed to be a moment of questioning between the players. Sabalenka was heard asking Anisimova, “Why didn’t you say sorry?” after the ball hit the top of the net before going over.

It’s not unusual for players to offer an apology or acknowledgment when such situations occur, but it seems this time things got a bit heated.

Despite this, it rarely escalates into significant disputes during matches.

Sabalenka managed to win the next two games, applying pressure on Anisimova. However, Anisimova held her ground and ultimately secured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

ESPN aired the exchange, highlighting the unexpected tension.

Chris Fowler remarked on the situation, pondering whether the interaction was more about gamesmanship than anything else. Chris Evert, a seasoned analyst, commented that it was unusual for players to call each other out like that, saying, “She’s not a happy camper right now.”

After the match, both players seemed to have resolved any lingering tensions, sharing a friendly online interaction, which didn’t overshadow Anisimova’s remarkable achievement. This marks her first Grand Slam Finals appearance.

Anisimova certainly faced a tough opponent in Sabalenka, who achieved the world number one ranking after winning three Grand Slam titles in 2023 and 2024.

Yet, Sabalenka’s recent performances have been less than stellar, with losses in the finals of both the Australian and French Opens this year. Following her match against Coco Gauff in the French final, she was criticized for unsportsmanlike behavior.

After her loss to Gauff, Sabalenka admitted, “I think she won the game, not because she played incredibly, just because I made all those mistakes,” acknowledging her own errors in the game.

She later reflected on her remarks, calling them “a completely unexplored” comment.

The early stages of the tournament had seen the two players share moments filled with tension, but it appears they have since moved past that.

Anisimova is set to face Iga Swiatek in the championship match after Swiatek triumphed over Belinda Bencic in the other semi-finals.
