Song Gains Popularity Amid American Eagle Ad Controversy
A song titled “Blue Jane,” by Ash Ruder, a former American Idol contestant, has gone viral, largely fueled by the buzz surrounding recent American Eagle ads featuring actress Sidney Sweeney. Ruder shared her thoughts in an interview, noting that the song, which she wrote in 2022, addresses themes of generational trauma and familial challenges.
Interestingly, the emotional resonance of “Blue Jane” seemed to connect with audiences while American Eagle rolled out its latest pun-themed campaign featuring Sweeney. Ruder expressed her surprise at how popular her song has become, linking it to the attention drawn by the advertisements.
In the ads, Sweeney models blue jeans, and one version includes the tagline highlighting how “genes” passed from parents often shape distinctive qualities—hair color, personality, and so forth. Ruder recalled her experience on American Idol, where she performed a song about her father, and she never expected her music to reach such levels of relevance.
Reflecting on her songwriting journey, Ruder mentioned, “It started as a small idea but turned into this unforeseen phenomenon.” Currently, her song is nearing five million views. She wrote “Blue Genes” on December 8, 2022, noting its purpose was to address her family’s hardships and break a generational curse.
Ruder remarked that it’s fascinating to see how her work has taken off, even if the connection to Sweeney’s ads seems somewhat superficial. One part of her song states, “I got the blue genes passed down from my mom and her mom too… I can’t change the pair I was born with.” This exploration of identity resonates with many listeners.
However, the ads have sparked criticism. Some observers believe they promote narrow cultural ideals, saying the campaign reflects “whiteness, thinness, and charm.” Despite this pushback, American Eagle stands by their advertisements, emphasizing the focus is indeed on the jeans.
Inquiries were made to both Ruder and American Eagle for further remarks on the situation.
