Ashley Judd Shares Her Story in New Judd Family Documentary: “I Discovered My Mother”

A Deep Dive into the Judd Family’s Legacy

Ashley Judd reflects on the intricate legacy of her mother, Naomi Judd, in the heartfelt documentary Judd Family: The Truth is Told. This film provides a poignant view of the family’s fame, the struggles with mental health, and the emotional challenges that come with public scrutiny.

Ashley opens up about her decision to not join the family band early on, prioritizing her education instead. This choice was, perhaps unsurprisingly, tough for her mother. “She wanted all three of us to be together,” Ashley explains, “but I had to follow my own path.” This sentiment exposes the tension between personal goals and familial duty.

Amidst the raw honesty, Ashley recalls the day her mother passed away from suicide on April 30, 2022, at the age of 76. “I walked to her bedroom. I’ve been both sad and traumatized since then.” Her narrative grounds the series, bringing a human touch to stories often sensationalized in media.

Addressing speculation about family conflict, Ashley clarifies, “Wynonna and I are not fighting. We had a disagreement, like any sisters, but the notion that we’re at odds over our mother’s estate is false. We’ve actually become closer.” Wynonna echoes this sentiment, saying on Doxally, “I love my sister. I always will. We are united in our grief.” Their shared support becomes a significant theme in the documentary.

Ashley also reflects on growing up in a household where her parents struggled with depression. “She was vulnerable, but still very strong,” she notes about Naomi. “There was so much more to her than what people saw on stage. It’s essential to share the truth.”

Throughout Judd Family: The Truth is Told, Ashley navigates her mother’s legacy with a balanced blend of admiration and honesty. This documentary encourages viewers to look beyond the headlines and foster a deeper, more empathetic understanding of Naomi Judd’s life, her loss, and the family she left behind.

The four-part event premiered on Saturday, May 10th.
