Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated on Sunday that the suspect linked to the lethal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is not cooperating with law enforcement. “He hasn’t confessed to the authorities,” Cox remarked during an interview with ABC News.
According to Cox, the suspect, Tyler Robinson, who was taken into custody by the FBI late Thursday, is not aiding the investigation, but those around him are. “But everyone around him is working together. I think that’s very important,” he noted.
Despite Robinson’s lack of cooperation, Cox mentioned that law enforcement gathered new insights about him through conversations with family and friends. He added that more forensic evidence will be revealed when charges are officially filed on Tuesday.
Cox also disclosed that Robinson was in a romantic relationship with his roommate, who is said to be cooperating with the investigation. Interestingly, he mentioned that the roommate is transgender. “You can see that the roommate we were originally discussing is a boyfriend who is transitioning from man to woman,” he explained in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
The governor expressed uncertainty about the motives behind the shooting. “Again, according to the families and people we’re interviewing, he comes from a conservative family. But his ideology was so different from his family’s, so that’s part of it,” he said.
During a press conference, Cox shared that Robinson’s family described him as having become more politically active in recent years. “They referenced a recent dinner before September 10th, where Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk and the negative views he and another family had about him,” Cox noted. “They expressed that Kirk was filled with hatred.”
