Elementary School Assistant Principal Accused of Shoplifting

An assistant principal from an elementary school in Cherokee County, Georgia, is facing allegations of stealing nearly $1,000 in merchandise from a Walmart.

The individual, Courtney Shaw, 47, reportedly committed theft 98 times at a Walmart located on Bells Ferry Road, amounting to $943.97, according to a report from WSB-TV.

These incidents are said to have taken place between November 2nd and December 31st. Shaw’s alleged method involved stacking multiple items together but only scanning one before placing them in a bag.

Employees mentioned that she drove away in a gray pickup truck or a Jeep. Detectives from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office managed to identify her, as cited by CBS News.

Authorities noted that after comparing her driver’s license photo with footage from the surveillance cameras, both a Walmart staff member and the investigating officer verified it was the same person. It was later determined that she resided in Woodstock.

A Jeep and pickup truck found at her home were linked to her. Investigators reported that Walmart had requested charges and had sought to ban Shaw from the store. A warrant was then issued, and relevant evidence was added to the case file.

On January 19, Shaw faced charges of theft by shoplifting but was released a few hours later after posting a bail of nearly $5,000.

Shaw is identified as an assistant principal at Freehome Elementary School but has been placed on administrative leave since the allegations surfaced.

In recent years, major retailers, including Walmart, have seen a rise in shoplifting incidents. Reports indicate that significant store closures are planned for 2023 due to this ongoing issue.

The 2022 National Retail Safety Survey highlighted the severity of the problem, revealing that retailers collectively lost $94.5 billion to theft and inventory loss in 2021. Several stores closed across states such as California, New York, Illinois, and Florida.

Interestingly, a case was recorded in Hartford, Wisconsin, where a woman accused of shoplifting returned to the Walmart during a “Shop with a Cop” event and was promptly arrested by law enforcement present at the scene.
