Manchester United are back, man. Or that’s how it’s felt the last few weeks, a semblance of calm descending, the wheels on the clown car actually turning. Of course, there’s been a few false dawns on the way, and the last of them was beating Villa 3-2 on Boxing Day but maybe with Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund putting it together, Erik Ten Hag can create a decent legacy, whatever Big Sir Jim Ratcliffe has in mind for him at the end of the season. As for Villa, their amazing 2023 has not translated just yet into a good 2024. They’re still in touch with the top four though, and beating United would do damage to a rival for a top-four/five place. This could be a good one.

43 minutes: Luke Shaw has to scramble to defend as the ball bounces around inside United’s box. Eventually, the danger will be resolved. However, Onana was under intense pressure and shanked the ball out of play.
41 minutes: Maguire again won the ball from a corner kick. This time the knockdown was cleared, but there wasn’t much lateral thinking going on when it came to defending Villa’s set-pieces.
40 minutes: Maguire comes forward and hits the ball. There is a scream of agony as Shaw wins the tackle. Then Hoylund got his corner and yes, there were boos.

31 minutes: Dalot’s cross was aimed at Hojlund but was narrowly cleared. Opportunities on both ends…soccer! The crowd was into this too.
half an hour: Casemiro has fallen and will take some time to get back on his feet. They are going to take quite a beating from Villa.
28 minutes: All villas now. United fell back and floundered. Moreno sends off Ramsey who misses the mark. United need to calm that down. They try to do so by passing the ball.
26 minutes: Onana was confused by his courage to deny Watkins. Eventually, the match resumes to more boos.
25 minutes: Another great onana save! McGinn again – would I do it again? – played at Watkins, with the Cameroonian goalkeeper throwing a Schmeichel-style starfish to deny the striker.
24 minutes: McGinn made a great shot and Onana made a great diving save. That was due to Casemiro losing the ball from behind the goalkeeper.
23 minutes: So, will United try to maintain their lead? There are signs that this could be the case, and given the quality of Villa and their own defence, this is a risky move.
22 minutes: close! Bailey gets into his favorite space and almost deflects his shot. Onana was booed when he took his time kicking the goal.
20 min: Villa force the first corner kick. Varun leaves forcefully. United’s team is very noisy at the moment. Moreno cuts inside and makes a play to the high-momentum Ramsey. This time the shot will fly.
18 minutes: The boos that greeted this goal were really loud. I have no complaints at this point other than to say Villa don’t have an answer for Big H’s air ability.
