AstraZeneca to invest $50 billion in the US, Trump describes it as an 'honor'

AstraZeneca, a UK-Swedish pharmaceutical firm, made headlines this week with a major $50 billion investment announcement in the United States. The Trump administration cited this as a sign of credibility tied to its tariff policies, with President Trump labeling it an “honor.”

This investment, revealed by the company on Monday, encompasses a total of $500 billion planned for domestic efforts by 2030, emphasizing “American Global Leadership in America’s Manufacturing and R&D.”

A significant part of the funding is directed toward a facility in Virginia, which AstraZeneca claims will be the largest single manufacturing operation worldwide. Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin expressed gratitude for AstraZeneca’s commitment, noting the expected job creation.

“Advanced manufacturing is crucial to Virginia’s vibrant economy, and we’re thrilled about AstraZeneca’s plans for this historic investment in global manufacturing,” Youngkin stated.

Funding will also support existing or upcoming facilities in states including California, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Texas. AstraZeneca anticipates that these investments will enable them to hit gross revenues of $80 billion by 2030.

“For decades, Americans have relied on foreign sources for essential medications. President Trump and our new tariff policies aim to eliminate this vulnerability,” said Commerce Secretary Rutnick in a statement.

“We take pride in AstraZeneca’s decision to boost drug production here. This landmark investment will create tens of thousands of jobs in the U.S. and ensures that medications sold domestically are made on our shores.”

Trump highlighted these investments during a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday.

“AstraZeneca, a major pharmaceutical company, just announced it will spend $50 billion in the U.S. to establish large manufacturing facilities nationwide,” Trump remarked. “That’s an honor. They’re investing because of the elections and tariffs, establishing locations in New York. It’s a significant investment,” he added.

However, it was unclear what specific aspect Trump alluded to, considering AstraZeneca has an office in New York.
