Bregman Faces Mixed Reception in Houston Return
Alex Bregman’s return to Daikin Park didn’t go as smoothly as one might expect.
When he first stepped onto the field, the Houston Astros fans cheered for him, honoring his contributions to the team—after all, Bregman played a crucial role in their past successes, including a World Series win. A video tribute painted a nostalgic picture, reflecting on his achievements and even highlighting his runner-up finish in the 2019 AL MVP voting.
However, that warm welcome quickly faded. Just moments later, Bregman hit a two-run home run off his former teammate, Christian Javier, bringing the Red Sox to a 2-0 lead. The cheers turned to boos as fans reacted to the swing, a stark reminder of the competitive spirit in baseball.
As the game progressed, Bregman faced even more hostility from the crowd upon his return to the plate in the third inning. Play-by-play analyst Todd Callas noted, “This is the second interesting response for Alex Bregman,” indicating that fans seemed to vacillate between nostalgia and resentment.
Color analyst Jeff Blum added that the Astros’ fans were likely to have mixed feelings, particularly with Bregman now playing for a rival team. “You’re going to deal damage against the Astros,” he said. The atmosphere certainly felt charged, especially when recalling other beloved players, like Carlos Correa, who were also part of the franchise’s history.
Bregman’s move to the Red Sox wasn’t just about sentiment. He signed a hefty three-year contract worth $120 million, which made a significant impact on the team roster, including the decision to trade Rafael Devers to accommodate him at third base.
Despite the rocky start of the night for Bregman, the Astros managed to pull off a 7-6 victory. But it wasn’t without complications, as standout closer Josh Hader was sidelined due to shoulder discomfort and was sent for an MRI.
The Astros currently sit at 67-52, leading the AL West by just a game over the Seattle Mariners.
