Officials said a car plowed into a crowd in a New Orleans tourist district early on New Year's Day, killing 10 people and injuring 30, before the driver opened fire, media reported.
Nora Reddy, the city's disaster response agency, issued a statement regarding the “mass casualty incident caused by a vehicle plowing into a large crowd at Canal Street and Bourbon Street.”
This area is part of the city's French Quarter, a popular nightlife destination.
CBS News and CNN witnesses cited The driver also reported firing a gun.
CBS Kati Weiss, one of the newspaper's reporters, said she saw people on the ground injured. Witnesses said the driver of the car opened fire and police returned fire, the newspaper said.
CBS News quoted a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department as saying, “Initial reports indicate the vehicle may have crashed into a group of people.”
CNN quoted Kevin Garcia, 22, as a witness, saying, “All I saw was a truck plowing into everyone on the left side of the sidewalk in Bourbon.
“A dead body was flying towards me,” he said, adding that he also heard gunshots.
