Tornado Supercell Strikes Ohio Valley, Leaving Devastation

A tornado supercell carved a path of destruction through the Ohio Valley late Friday, resulting in at least 21 fatalities in Kentucky and Missouri, according to officials.

Laurel County was particularly affected, reporting nine of Kentucky’s 14 deaths as of Saturday morning. The state remained in the rescue phase, with about 100,000 residents still without power, as five counties were placed under emergency declarations.

In Missouri, seven individuals lost their lives, with many others injured as the tornado wreaked havoc, especially in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

A storm chaser near Morganfield, Kentucky, managed to capture one of the tornadoes on video.

After daybreak, a storm chaser shared drone footage from the London area, revealing flattened homes, overturned cars, and uprooted trees, as if a giant mower had passed through.

“The entire neighborhood is gone,” stated a chaser from WxChasing, noting the destruction is indicative of an EF4 tornado, the most powerful classification, with wind speeds reaching up to 200 mph.

Search and rescue operations were still in progress on Saturday, according to local officials and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

The governor had declared an emergency early Friday to prepare for the storm’s arrival.

“Thanks to @kentuckyem, first responders, @kystatepolice, and local officials for their efforts to keep everyone safe. Our resources are concentrated on rescue efforts,” he said.

A resident from London, Kentucky, recounted their experience during the storm: “My daughter was scared, so we went down the hallway, and after about two minutes, my husband ran outside. I nearly jumped over her when I felt the air being sucked in; it sounded like a train. We saw debris falling, and then most of the house was just… gone.”

Carla Spencer, the Mayor of St. Louis, confirmed at least five storm-related deaths in her city and imposed a curfew as over 5,000 homes were affected.

Sheriffs in Scott County, located about two hours south of St. Louis, reported at least two more fatalities and multiple injuries.

“Our county was struck by a devastating tornado today, causing significant damage in rural areas,” said Scott County Sheriff Derrick Wheatley. “The tornado moved through the eastern part of the county, leaving behind extensive destruction; many homes were completely destroyed.”

As of Saturday morning, reports indicated that over 80,000 residents in Missouri were without power.

This supercell, often referred to as “the king of thunderstorms,” is known for its longevity and characteristic upward rotation along with wind shear, according to the National Weather Service.

The total count of tornadoes spawned by the storm in the Ohio Valley remains undetermined.
