In Chicago, led by Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, at least 31 people were shot, five of them fatally, from Friday through Sunday over Memorial Day weekend.
Breitbart News reported that 10 people were shot in Chicago on the first night of the holiday weekend, with two of those shot dying from their injuries.
NBC Chicago report The third fatal shooting happened “around 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of South Harding,” when a 39-year-old man was shot while standing on the sidewalk. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
About two hours later, the group was standing on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of South Christiana when an unknown assailant opened fire on them, fatally shooting a 28-year-old man in the back.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., a 5-year-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in the back seat of a parked car in the 200 block of South Campbell Avenue. The assailant appeared to be targeting people near the car, rather than the girl herself.
As throughout Illinois, Chicago residents must obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card to legally own a gun, and the process to obtain the card includes a thorough background check conducted by the Illinois State Police.
Other restrictions in place in Chicago include a statewide ban on “assault weapons” and “large capacity” magazines, a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, red flag laws, etc. Additionally, Cook County, where Chicago is located, has its own “assault weapons” ban.
Despite Democrat gun control, over 180 people have been murdered in Chicago since January 1, 2024.
