At Least Five People Killed in Major Nighttime Russian Attack on Ukraine

Russian Attacks on Ukraine Result in Civilian Casualties

According to reports, at least five civilians lost their lives due to a barrage of drone and missile strikes carried out by Russia in Ukraine this past Sunday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Moscow had launched over 50 ballistic missiles and deployed around 500 drones across nine regions in Ukraine.

In the city of Lviv, four individuals, including a 15-year-old, were killed during these attacks, as reported by regional authorities and Ukrainian emergency services. It’s ironic, given that this historic city is often viewed as a safe haven from the destruction seen in the east. Additionally, at least six others were reported injured.

The aftermath saw two districts plunged into darkness, with public transportation halted for several hours. Mayor Andri Sadowy mentioned that business complexes on the city’s outskirts caught fire due to the attacks, which he emphasized were unrelated to the war effort.

Local Governor Svitlana Onyshchuk also indicated that one person sustained injuries in the Ivano-Frankivsk area, situated to the south of Lviv.

In southern Zaporidia, air assaults during the night resulted in the deaths of civilian women and left nine others injured, including a 16-year-old girl, as reported by regional governor Ivan Fedorov. He noted that drones and guided air bombs were used in these strikes.

Fedorov further stated that residential buildings were damaged, affecting approximately 73,000 households in Zaporia and nearby regions.

In Sloviansk, a significant city under Ukrainian control in the eastern Donetsk region, six people—including children—were injured after a guided air bomb struck apartment blocks, according to regional prosecutors. The airstrike on Saturday evening inflicted damage on 20 residential buildings, as well as vehicles and local businesses.

Zelenskyy reiterated his plea to western allies for more air defense systems, describing the situation as an “air horror.” He noted, “Today, once again, the Russians have targeted our infrastructure. We need more protection, particularly swift implementation of all defense agreements related to air defense, to negate this aerial threat.”

For several months, Ukraine has been conducting its own long-range strikes within Russia, primarily targeting oil infrastructure, which has contributed to ongoing fuel shortages.

As winter approaches, the Kremlin has intensified its assaults on Ukraine’s power grid—similar to last year since the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.

Moscow has also increased airstrikes aimed at Ukrainian railway networks critical for military transport. Attacks have become a near-daily occurrence, with a recent drone strike hitting a railway station in Shostka, resulting in one death and numerous injuries.
