The deadly storms ripped through Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, killing at least nine people, the Associated Press reported Sunday.
Powerful tornadoes ripped through three states, destroying homes and truck stops where drivers had taken shelter from the storm. AP report.
Five of those believed to have died were in Texas, near the Oklahoma border. Reports said a tornado struck the area on Saturday evening, causing damage in a rural area near a mobile home park. In Oklahoma, wedding guests were reportedly injured in the storm, and tens of thousands of people were left without power.
“There’s just a bunch of debris left behind with no traces of it. The damage is pretty severe,” Cook County Sheriff Ray Sappington told The Associated Press.
The sheriff said “search and rescue efforts are ongoing” and that authorities “have already begun recovering the deceased.” NPR.
Two people were reported dead in Arkansas, including a 26-year-old woman found outside her destroyed home. In Texas, a family of three was killed near Valley View, a sheriff told The Associated Press. (RELATED: Another day of tornadoes strikes multiple states)

In addition to the deaths, 80 people were injured across the three states, The Weather ChannelThe media reported that 2-inch hail fell in parts of Texas and wind gusts of up to 72 mph.
The storms were the latest in a series of deadly disasters to hit the Plains, Midwest and South in May, according to The Weather Channel, which also reported hail and strong winds in eastern Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Arkansas.
