The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced that it has deployed a specialized team to investigate a significant explosion at a manufacturing facility in Tennessee, which has resulted in 18 individuals being reported missing.
Officials indicated there were multiple fatalities from the blast at Accurate Energetic Systems, situated near Bucksnort, about 80 miles from Nashville, just before 8 a.m. local time Friday.
The ATF described its National Response Team as an elite group of investigators trained to handle incidents involving explosives, fires, and bombings. They are capable of reaching any location across the U.S. within 24 hours. This team includes agents, bomb technicians, fire protection engineers, certified fire investigators, and other specialists.
Team members are arriving on site today and have tackled previous major incidents, including the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon and the Oklahoma City bombing.
The ATF stated that the team’s primary role is to determine the explosion’s origin and cause, as well as to collect and document evidence from the scene.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene as possibly the most horrifying he has ever encountered.
Jeremy Moore, a long-time employee of the plant, has been identified as missing. His mother shared that he had just dropped off his daughter before heading to work when the explosion occurred. She expressed disbelief and a desire for answers regarding her son’s fate.
In a statement, Accurate Energetic Systems acknowledged the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. and remarked that the situation is under active investigation.
The company conveyed their condolences to those impacted and thanked first responders for their efforts amid challenging conditions. They promised to provide updates as information becomes available.
A sign near the site has called for prayers for the affected families.
Rescue operations were delayed due to the presence of burning debris and concerns about a potential secondary explosion. Currently, the area is safe.
Davis noted that the investigation could take several days, emphasizing that immediate answers are unlikely. He mentioned, sadly, that while there have been confirmed deaths, no specific number has been shared yet, and 18 individuals remain unaccounted for.
The Accurate Energetic Systems facility spans 1,300 acres and includes several buildings dedicated to manufacturing, storing, and testing explosives for various sectors, including military and commercial demolition.
According to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, over 300 emergency personnel from multiple agencies were involved in the response to this tragic event, highlighting the coordinated efforts to ensure public safety and provide support to affected families.
Governor Bill Lee also called for prayers for those impacted by this unfortunate incident.
