Ukrainian Athlete Disqualified at Winter Olympics
Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladislav Heraskevich was disqualified from the Winter Olympics on Thursday after refusing to take off his helmet. The helmet displayed the faces of over 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches who lost their lives due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Russia.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) determined that the helmet breached the Athlete Expression Guidelines, which prohibit political statements during competitions. Despite a prior warning about potential disqualification, Heraskevich had asserted his intention to compete with the helmet.
Earlier that Thursday, IOC President Curtsy Coventry attempted to negotiate with the athletes and their fathers, but the discussion ended in Heraskevich’s disqualification, leaving both his father and Coventry in tears, as reported.
“There are things more important than medals,” Heraskevich said to reporters following the meeting. “I stood up for what I believed in.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed admiration for Heraskevich on social media, stating, “We are proud of Vladislav and his achievements. Courage is more valuable than any medal.” He continued by emphasizing that the Olympic movement should promote peace, not conflict.
Zelenskiy also signed a law granting Heraskevich the Order of Freedom, a prestigious civilian award in Ukraine, recognizing his dedication to the nation and his bravery in advocating for freedom and democratic values.
Additionally, Ukrainian luge athlete Olena Smaha showed her support earlier this week. Heraskevich had also made a statement by wearing gloves that said, “Mourning is not a violation.”
