Colorado football is currently experiencing a challenging period in its third season under head coach Deion Sanders. The Buffaloes have faced setbacks, losing four out of their last five games, which leaves them with a 3-6 record heading into their Week 11 matchup against West Virginia.
Amid these struggles, Sanders has continued to garner support from notable figures in the college sports arena. Colorado State’s athletic director, Rick George, voiced his confidence in Coach Prime, emphasizing the need for the team to secure more victories. “I’m proud of Coach Prime. It’s been a tough year. He’s remained resilient, focused, and is doing what I expect of him as a coach. We just need to win more games,” George told reporters.
George also touched on Sanders’ health issues, which had been a significant topic before the season began. In July, Sanders shared that he underwent surgery to remove his bladder after a tumor was discovered. Fortunately, there has been no sign of cancer since the procedure. Doctors had to reconstruct part of his intestine to take on the function of a bladder, which raised questions about whether he would continue as coach, but his dedication to Colorado has remained strong.
Sanders began his role as head coach of Colorado’s football program in December 2022. He took the reins of a team that had only one victory the previous season. With his background as a charismatic NFL legend, Sanders brought a fresh spotlight to a program that had long been overlooked.
This season has been particularly tough, with Sanders regularly facing formidable opponents. Recruiting hasn’t gone as well as hoped, especially in light of Colorado State’s move to the Big 12 Conference. Although the Buffaloes managed to secure nine wins in 2024, they’ve struggled to fill the gaps left by key players, such as two-way star Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Hunter was selected second overall in the recent NFL Draft, while Shedeur went in the fifth round.
In the offseason, Kaidon Salter transferred from Liberty to Colorado, but his inconsistent play has allowed for opportunities for other quarterbacks like Julian Lewis to step in. Following a tough loss to Arizona last week, in which the Buffaloes were defeated 52-17, Sanders decided to prohibit his players from speaking to the media.
The upcoming game against West Virginia is set to kick off at noon ET at Pusker Stadium in Milan. It will be interesting to see how the team responds under the current circumstances.
