Athletics commentator Chris Caray vastly miscalls home run

Daytime baseball can be tough to follow sometimes.

On Saturday, announcer Chris Curray had a bit of a moment that had everyone talking.

Harry Curray, a fourth-generation broadcaster and great-grandson of the legendary Harry Curray, misjudged a call on Lawrence Butler’s ninth home run. He initially announced it as a foul ball before realizing it was indeed gone.

As it turned out, Butler smashed a three-run homer that soared to the right-center field, giving the team an early lead.

A home run that clearly wasn’t close to the foul pole helped the A’s take a 5-1 lead, which ended up being the final score against the Astros at Daikin Park.

The 25-year-old Curray seemed a bit flustered as he said, “From the right, it’s high in the air… That ball is foul… or, um, it’s gone.” It was a bit of a mixed message, to say the least.

After some backlash online, the A’s official account removed a previous post admitting to the misstep. They later shared the radio call instead.

Curray took responsibility for the gaffe after the game, saying, “I completely lost track of the ball in the lights. There’s really no excuse for it. I know it must have been frustrating for Butler and our fans. It’s all on me.”

He even added a touch of humor in a follow-up tweet, noting, “This job involves recognizing that while people cheer your successes, they also have the right to point out your mistakes. I appreciate those who kept it light, and of course, I love baseball.”

Dallas Braden, a former MLB pitcher, even chimed in with some humor about the call that Curray shared.

Curray comes from a lineage of broadcasters; his father, Chip, currently works for the Cardinals, while his grandfather, Skip, has a long history in broadcasting, notably with the Braves. Their great-grandfather, Harry, is a beloved figure in baseball and a Hall of Fame recipient.

Amid the mishap, it was a solid performance by the A’s. Butler has had a strong season overall, with 15 home runs and impressive stats including a .238/.310/.420 batting line, along with 44 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

Currently sitting at the bottom of the AL West, the A’s were aiming to close out the four-game series against the Astros on a high note.
