Atlanta police officer Aubree Horton shot, killed while breaking into neighbor’s home

An off-duty Atlanta Police Department officer was shot and killed by a neighbor early Friday after he allegedly broke into a home near St. Andrews Golf Club in Douglas County, Georgia, officials said.

The officer, identified as Aubrey Horton, had been with the Atlanta Police Department since 2015 and was most recently part of the fugitive unit, the department told FOX News Digital.

Horton also just won the Investigator of the Year award late last month, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

“We are working closely with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to learn more about what happened as they investigate the incident,” the department said in a statement shared with FOX News Digital.

FOX 5 reports that surveillance footage shows Horton “having mental health symptoms or being under the influence of drugs.”

“During the break-in, the homeowner pulled out a gun in self-defense and shot and killed the individual,” Douglas County Sheriff's Office Capt. John Mohney told reporters, according to FOX 5. .
