Officer Killed in Shooting Near CDC in Atlanta

The DeKalb County Police Department has identified the officer who was fatally shot while responding to a shooting incident near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Officer David Rose, 33, tragically lost his life during the confrontation.

This accident happened on the CDC campus, which led to emergency shelter orders at a nearby Emory University location. A suspected shooter, whose identity remains unknown, was also killed in the incident. Rose was rushed to Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Having joined the police department last September, Rose is survived by his pregnant wife and two children.

Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick acknowledged Rose’s commitment to the community in a statement, urging thoughts and prayers for the officer’s family, loved ones, and the entire police department.

The events unfolded just before 5 PM, as noted by Atlanta Police Chief Darrin Siebaum. Upon responding to the scene, officers found Rose in critical condition and heard further shots coming from a nearby CVS pharmacy.

Inside the pharmacy, Rose discovered a shooter on the second floor, who had at least one gunshot wound. It’s still unclear whether these injuries were self-inflicted or caused by police fire.

Chief Siebaum commended the law enforcement officers who responded, stating that their quick action helped to mitigate further danger to the community.

Meanwhile, CDC director Susan Monares expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that a brave officer lost his life in the line of duty. She noted that the response from DeKalb County Police, CDC security, and Emory University was prompt and decisive, which likely prevented greater harm.

Federal and state officials shared their shock regarding the shooting and praised the swift response from law enforcement. Senator Rafael Warnock from Georgia also expressed his condolences, stating he is mourning the loss of an officer and praying for the family and friends affected. He acknowledged the vital role law enforcement plays in saving lives within the community.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, with support from the FBI’s Atlanta office.
