Police Officer Killed in Shooting Near CDC

On Friday, local authorities addressed a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a police officer, with indications suggesting a possible targeting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“You can tell that multiple rounds have been fired. You’re a law enforcement agency; you might think it’s connected to the CDC. It’s hard to say for sure, but you can’t rule it out,” said a spokesperson during a press conference.

The shooting took place in the afternoon near the CDC campus in Atlanta, as well as Emory University. One officer from DeKalb County tragically lost his life, while another was injured and taken to a hospital.

According to local officials, four bullet holes were discovered on a wall at the CDC campus.

“Right now, we’re asking the community for prayers for his family, friends, and for the entire DeKalb County Police Department. It’s a noble profession we all share,” a spokesperson noted.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released the identity of the fallen officer.

CDC Director Susan Monares expressed her condolences regarding the incident. “We are heartbroken by the attacks on our campus today as law enforcement investigates the shooting. Brave officers risked their lives, and another individual was injured when gunfire struck at least four CDC buildings,” she stated.

The shooter was found deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound. It’s uncertain whether it was self-inflicted or if he was shot by an officer. Paul Brown, a special agent with the FBI, indicated that the shooter was a white male.

While CNN reported that authorities are considering the possibility that the shooter believed he was unwell and blamed his condition on the Covid-19 vaccine, law enforcement officials provided no confirmation at this time.

“For those working at the CDC, we recognize this has been a tough year for you. My heart goes out to you in your profession. You’re part of the Atlanta community, and that holds significance for me,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said during a press conference. “We stand with you and will do everything possible to address this situation,” he added.
