Attorney Ed Martin to supervise Schiff and New York AG fraud investigations

Pardon attorney Ed Martin to oversee Schiff, New York AG fraud probes

Ed Martin, a lawyer with the Justice Department, has been tasked with overseeing ongoing cases involving the Trump administration, notably those brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Adam Schiff from California.

Martin heads the DOJ’s Weaponization Working Group, which aims to address alleged misuse within the criminal justice system. His initial focus is on investigating some notable adversaries of Trump.

This year, the Federal Housing and Finance Agency (FHFA) referred a matter to James, alleging that a property in Virginia was improperly designated as a primary residence to obtain more favorable loan conditions. Similar claims were made against Schiff, both of whom have denied any wrongdoing.

James contends that this investigation is a backlash against her role in pursuing fraud allegations against the Trump organization and conducting inquiries related to the National Rifle Association.

Attorney Abbe Lowell, representing James, described the situation as an evident and desperate attempt by this administration to undermine those pursuing legitimate investigations. He stated, “Utilizing the Justice Department to retaliate against elected officials performing their duties threatens the rule of law and marks a troubling escalation by this administration.”

James recently scored a significant legal victory against Trump, with a judge imposing nearly a $5 billion penalty on his company for inflating asset valuations.

The investigation led by state prosecutors was initiated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Upstate District of New York, which issued two subpoenas earlier this week.

Martin is notable for his involvement in defending individuals linked to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He previously worked as a U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., but resigned during an ethical inquiry, which resulted in his removal from that position.

Later, Trump appointed him as a defense attorney. Martin, a former FBI agent, has also been involved with the Patriot Freedom Project, a crowdfunding nonprofit that raised $2.5 million to support those charged in connection with the Capitol riots.
