Attorney General Pam Bondi Set to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee

Attorney General Pam Bondi is expected to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, where she will likely face questions regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking case, the handling of various politically sensitive investigations by the Justice Department, and proposed reforms within the department.

This hearing, starting at 10 a.m., marks Bondi’s first time testifying before a House committee since assuming her role at the Justice Department.

While some Republicans may commend Bondi for shifting the focus towards street crime, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration, there are indications that Democrats, along with some fellow Republicans, plan to scrutinize her regarding the department’s adherence to the Epstein File Transparency Act. This law mandates the Justice Department to disclose all unclassified documents related to the Epstein case.

An additional hurdle stems from Epstein’s passing, which complicates the review of extensive files that must be completed within a tight 30-day window.

Committee Republicans are likely to highlight the department’s initiatives against cross-border drug trafficking and violence, issues that have been prioritized by the Trump administration.

One of the most notable cases during Bondi’s oversight was the indictment of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife on charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy and firearms violations. After their dramatic arrests last month, both were transported to the Southern District of New York for trial proceedings.

Other contentious judicial matters may also surface during the hearing.

Recently, a federal judge ruled that the temporary appointment of Lindsay Harrigan as head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Eastern Virginia was unlawful. This development has hindered the Justice Department’s high-profile indictment against FBI Director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James, resulting in the dismissal of the case by a judge. The Justice Department is currently appealing this decision.
