Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to ignore subpoenas from Republican lawmakers.
This comes amid threats to sue Garland for contempt.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said this week that he would refuse subpoenas from Republican lawmakers with whom he disagrees.
According to the Washington Post, Garland’s statement came after Republican leaders in Congress threatened to hold him in contempt for “attempting to access audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert K. Hur’s investigation into President Biden’s handling of classified material.”
According to the Washington Post, Garland expressed concern that “releasing the recordings could harm future efforts to get officials to cooperate with the investigation and provide recorded interviews,” and urged the president to assert executive privilege over the recordings.
Speaking before the House Judiciary Committee this week, Garland accused Republicans of “targeting contempt charges as a way to obtain, for no legitimate purpose, confidential law enforcement information that could undermine the integrity of future investigations. This effort is only the latest in a long line of attacks on the operations of the Department of Justice.”
