Enhanced Federal Prosecutors Arrive in Minnesota Amid Fraud Inquiry

Attorney General Pam Bondi has revealed that the Justice Department is dispatching extra federal prosecutors to Minnesota. This move comes as part of an expanding investigation into a Somali-run nonprofit organization facing fraud allegations.

“The Department of Justice is sending a team of prosecutors to Minnesota to bolster the U.S. Attorney’s Office and ensure that those responsible for this far-reaching fraud face serious repercussions,” Bondi stated. She also noted that the department is prepared to extend its efforts to other states grappling with similar fraudulent operations that undermine taxpayer resources.

Officials from the Justice Department mentioned plans for enhancing prosecutorial resources in various states in the near future.

The incident is tied to an ongoing investigation into welfare fraud that emerged during former Attorney General Merrick Garland’s tenure. In 2022, Garland had announced initial charges linked to a massive $250 million scheme associated with Minnesota’s nonprofit Feeding Our Future, which misused taxpayer-funded child nutrition programs. At that time, he called it “the largest pandemic relief scam ever.”

Bondi’s Justice Department continues to pursue cases related to Feeding Our Future, which also involves alleged jury bribery and health care fraud. Recently, Bondi indicated that the fraud’s scale appears to be greater than initially realized, suggesting that more individuals might face charges thanks to the added prosecutors assigned to the state’s Justice Department.

As of now, the department has indicted 98 individuals and secured convictions for 64 in connection with fraud cases in Minnesota, the majority of whom are of Somali descent.

The Trump administration, which includes federal agencies like the Department of Justice, has been focusing on the estimated 100,000 Somali individuals in Minnesota as a potential target for immigration actions. Critics argue this approach unfairly paints a broad brush, asserting that only a fraction of this community participates in fraudulent activities and charging that it reflects a xenophobic agenda against Somali-Americans.

Recently, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that several Democratic-led states, including Minnesota, are halting billions in federal funding for child care services. They are also investigating the spending of taxpayer funds.

A viral video by content creator Nick Shirley, released in December, has drawn significant attention to the alleged fraud in Minnesota. In the video, Shirley visits a Somali-operated nursery, only to find it closed. This clip has since gained millions of views on social media, further illuminating concerns about the scandal.

In the aftermath of the scrutiny, some nursery school operators have faced controversy, with one stating agreement with Shirley’s insights while maintaining a denial of any fraudulent actions.
