Aubrey Plaza tears ACL playing ‘knockout’ before WNBA All-Star Game

Aubrey Plaza probably didn’t expect to end the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend with a serious knee injury.

Plaza, 40, was seen on crutches and with a large pack of ice on her right knee, sitting courtside next to Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe during Saturday’s WNBA All-Star game on ABC, where play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco revealed that Plaza had torn her anterior cruciate ligament.

Ruocco said the “Parks and Recreation” star sustained the injury during a “knockout” bout at the Phoenix Mercury’s training facility.

The previous day, Plaza was spotted participating in the 3-Point Contest and Skills Challenge without the use of crutches.

Unfortunately for Plaza, this wasn’t the first time he’d suffered the exact same injury in the same sport.

On Friday, Plaza appeared on Rapinoe and Bird’s podcast, “A Touch More,” and wryly recounted her experience first tearing her ACL while playing in a women’s recreational league in Los Angeles.

The actress said she became a “villain” and wore disguises to play on the same team as her sister, Natalie.

“I thought, ‘No one will know it’s me. This is great,'” she said.

“Then, halfway through the game, I put on my wig and I was on the court trying to take a shot and I tore my ACL, which was like a worst-case scenario and I was trying to go undercover and basically gave up my knee.”

For Plaza, the recent injury was probably a terrible feeling of deja vu.

Still, Plaza appeared to be having fun during Saturday’s game.

The WNBA team, featuring Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Arike Ogunbowale and Jonquel Jones, defeated the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team, 117-109.

A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu were just a handful of players who made up the star-studded Team USA.
