Auburn Parts Ways with Hugh Freeze After Disappointing Loss
Following a tough defeat against Kentucky, where Auburn managed a mere three points in a 10-3 loss, chants of “Fire Freeze” erupted from the student section. In light of this pressure, Auburn has decided to terminate its head coach, Hugh Freeze.
After this dismal outcome, it became evident to Freeze, and perhaps everyone involved, that resignation was his only option as the team fell to a troubling 1-5 in the SEC.
In the interim, defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will take over as head coach. Auburn’s upcoming schedule includes a game against Vanderbilt, followed by matches against Mercer and Alabama to conclude the 2025 season.
Auburn will owe Freeze around $15.5 million for the remaining duration of his contract, and no negotiations regarding a buyout are reported to have taken place.
Initially, Freeze promised to revitalize the Auburn program, but it seems many fans began to feel misled. After various defeats, he would often say, “almost there,” which only fueled frustration among supporters. Many feel that, in reality, his leadership led the team to a worse spot compared to where it started. The Brian Harsin era was challenging, yet under Freeze, hopes seemed to fade more rapidly with each game.
Searching for a New Direction
The sentiment surrounding the coaching situation at Auburn suggests that it’s far from salvageable, and financial support in the form of NIL funding may not be enough to fix deeper issues. While Auburn’s boosters have tried to contribute, the results haven’t aligned with the investment.
Auburn is now on the lookout for a new head coach and competing with other programs like LSU, Florida, and Arkansas in the search. It’s a tough choice, as many are questioning who will ultimately do the best job; Auburn is arguably not at the top of that list right now.
With many influential figures ready to back the next head coach financially, and quick fixes available through the transfer portal, waiting until the end of the season wasn’t an option. Fan support will likely remain strong, and it’s reasonable to think the Tigers might rally for their next game against Vanderbilt.
However, as Freeze stood at the podium, the weight of realization hung heavy; it was likely his final moment representing Auburn. We now wait and see where the Tigers will head next, joining a cacophony of change now echoing throughout college football.
