Auburn University professor killed while walking dog in park, suspect arrested

A retired professor from Auburn University was discovered deceased in a wooded area of Kiesel Park, Alabama, over the weekend. Following the incident, police have arrested a suspect.

The deceased has been identified as 59-year-old Dr. Julie Gard Schnuel.

Authorities from the Auburn Police Department named Harold Rashad Dabney III as the individual charged with two counts of capital murder.

Reports indicate that the suspect had been sentenced to death after Schnuel died from being “stabbed and killed” shortly after taking her dog for a walk.

Auburn police stated, “Schnuel’s injuries were consistent with an attack involving a sharp object, likely a knife.” It’s also noted that her dog was unharmed.

On Sunday, officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual a few miles from the park. Police linked Dabney to Schnuel’s murder based on their findings.

Additionally, Schnuel’s Ford F-150 was reported missing following her death. Authorities allege that Dabney stole the vehicle after the murder, which was later recovered.

As investigations continue, police can be seen securing the area with tape.

Dabney is currently detained at Lee County Jail.

In response to Schnuel’s death, the university expressed deep sorrow, stating that she was a cherished member of the community at Auburn University and within the School of Veterinary Medicine.

The Auburn Police Department is handling the ongoing investigation and has requested that all inquiries be directed to them. They extended heartfelt condolences to Schnuel’s family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.
