Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) stated that the Trump administration’s move to detain Turkish students who attended Tufts University on student visas was unusual, deviating from Massachusetts’s traditions.
“For four centuries, Massachusetts has embraced students and immigrants. The video we witnessed today of Tufts graduate student Le Mesa Ozturk being apprehended by a masked officer contradicts that tradition.” Thursday’s post x.
Details regarding Ozturk’s detention, carried out by Musk’s six agents, have spread widely on the internet.
Democrats expressed concerns about the manner of her removal. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) highlighted the situation as a significant “cold” moment for all Americans, while Auchincloss suggested he believes the student is influenced by her political beliefs.
“Ms. Ozturk has not presented any evidence of violence or harassment. She has co-authored her perspectives on Israel. I disagree. I have written about dissent,” remarked a Massachusetts legislator.
“That’s how America functions. Revoking her visa due to her political stance is contrary to American values.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) echoed a similar sentiment regarding Yunzeo Chong, a Columbia University student who the Trump administration is trying to expel.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio estimated that over 300 international students have had their visas canceled since the Trump administration took office.
“We do that on a daily basis. Any time we identify one of these individuals, I cancel their visa,” Rubio informed the media during a press conference.
“We have eliminated all of them, and we hope to eventually run out, but we are actively seeking these individuals daily who are causing disruption.”
The goal of the Trump administration is to execute the most extensive deportation in the history of the nation.
