Trump Surprises Hungarian Crowd with Phone Call
A crowd in Hungary erupted in applause on Tuesday when President Donald Trump unexpectedly joined Vice President J.D. Vance’s speech via phone call. Vance was addressing the audience in Hungary ahead of the upcoming general elections, showing his support for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. As he spoke, Vance activated the speakerphone, prompting cheers from roughly 5,000 attendees.
“Wow, there’s some people in there, JD,” Trump remarked, responding to the applause. Vance responded, “Mr. President, you’re among about 5,000 Hungarian patriots, and I think they love you more than Viktor Orbán.” Trump acknowledged this sentiment, saying, “It’s unbelievable. I love Hungary, and I love Viktor. He’s a great guy, and we have a fantastic relationship. Remember, he didn’t let people invade your country like others did.”
During the event, Vance and Orbán held a joint press conference where Vance accused the European Union (EU) of meddling in Hungary’s electoral process. Orbán, who has been in power for 16 years, faces potential challenges from Péter Magyar, a former key member of the Fidesz party.
Vance remarked, “I’m not going to dictate how Hungarians should vote. I’d also suggest that the bureaucrats in Brussels refrain from doing so.” In June 2024, Hungary was fined by the European Court of Justice for failing to adhere to asylum regulations and limiting access to asylum procedures. Since 2015, Hungary has resisted the EU’s refugee migration policies, with Orbán insisting that immigration, particularly from Muslim-majority nations, threatens the nation’s Christian cultural identity.
Both leaders declared that U.S.-Hungarian relations are thriving during Trump’s presidency, aligning on critical issues such as immigration and gender ideology. Vance expressed that he visited Hungary to back Orbán’s re-election, commending his efforts to uphold Western civilization.
