Gregg Popovich Faces Health Scare and Resigns as Spurs Head Coach
Last month, Gregg Popovich experienced a medical emergency while dining at a restaurant in San Antonio. Reports indicate that he fainted at a steakhouse and was subsequently taken away in an ambulance.
During the incident, 911 callers described him as initially “not responding.” Later updates mentioned him as “barely responding.” Thankfully, it appears that he did not suffer any life-threatening issues, and by the time he arrived at the hospital, he was reportedly alert.
The 76-year-old Popovich has a history of health challenges, having previously recovered from a stroke that sidelined him for almost the entire 2024-25 season.
Shortly following this health scare, Popovich announced his resignation as head coach. He stated, “While the love and passion for the game remains, I have decided it’s time to leave as head coach.” He expressed gratitude to the players, staff, and fans who supported him throughout his tenure.
Despite stepping down from coaching, Popovich will still serve as the President of Basketball Operations for the Spurs. His impressive career includes leading the team to five NBA Championships and earning the title of the winningest coach in league history. His accolades also include three NBA Coach of the Year awards and an Olympic gold medal, securing him a place in the Hall of Fame in 2023.
This past season, the Spurs were unable to secure a playoff spot, partially due to Victor Wembanyama’s injury, which limited his participation in many games.
Looking ahead, the Spurs hold the second overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft, looking to enhance their roster for the future.
