Some people can be quite surprising.
Odramaku Donald, a 55-year-old man, allegedly followed Audra McDonald home after one of her final performances of “Gypsy” at the Majestic Theatre. He is said to have asked for an autograph during this encounter.
In a detailed Long Instagram Video, McDonald shared her experience after she took her final bow on this hit Broadway play. She revealed that some fans had tracked her down, saying they’d “sneaked” around to find her.
She noted that the interaction crossed over into uncomfortable territory. McDonald described how, when they finally received help from security, fans claimed they had been following her for quite a while, naming various cities they had visited.
McDonald made it clear, however, that this kind of behavior is unacceptable. “It’s crossing a huge boundary,” she remarked, stressing that it compromises her safety. “That’s not right.”
Using her platform, McDonald aims to educate about proper theater etiquette, pointing out that not all actors engage with fans outside the stage door. “There are many reasons why performers don’t stop,” she explained. “Some of those reasons are really personal.”
She added, “If you see an actor leaving the stage door, and they don’t stop, leave them be. There’s a reason they aren’t stopping, and it isn’t about you.”
Recently, she returned to Instagram, celebrating her role as “Mama Rose” in “Gypsy,” after a successful run featuring 28 previews and 261 performances. McDonald made history in 2024 by becoming the first Black actress to portray this character on Broadway and received a Tony nomination for her performance.
After her final performance, she expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful, fierce, and loving group to share this journey with.” She reflected on the experience with warmth: “My head is full of beautiful memories, my body is tired, but my heart is so full of love.”
Before her last show, McDonald found herself in the spotlight again when Broadway veteran Patti LuPone made some pointed remarks about her, calling their relationship into question. LuPone openly dissed McDonald and another actress, which, unsurprisingly, drew attention.
In a recent interview, McDonald spoke about her shock at LuPone’s comments, saying, “If there’s some divide, I’m not really sure what it is.” She acknowledged that her busy life had made it challenging to stay in touch with LuPone, adding, “I haven’t seen her in about 11 years, so I really can’t say what she’s referring to.”
In response to the situation, over 500 Broadway artists signed an open letter condemning LuPone’s comments about McDonald and her colleague. It seems the Broadway community has come together in support of their fellow performers.
