Austin Butler’s Health Struggles After Filming ‘Elvis’
Austin Butler recently opened up about some terrifying health issues he faced after wrapping up the filming of the Elvis Presley biopic, directed by Buzz Ruhrman. The 34-year-old actor described moments of temporary blindness and a profound fear for his life.
Butler shared that it all began with what was labeled a virus in interviews for various media outlets. He spent three years away from his family, dedicated to preparing for and filming “Elvis.”
After completing the film, he woke up in extreme pain, initially thinking it might be appendicitis, and was hospitalized for a week. And this was just the start of what he called his health nightmare.
During travel to the set for his next project, The Bikeriders—a drama centered on a Midwest biker gang—Butler experienced a severe migraine followed by a brief loss of vision. He described the sensation as though life was being “sucked into” him, feeling an overwhelming euphoria which made him think he was dying.
Despite these alarming symptoms, Butler pushed through and went to the set, attributing his struggles to sleep deprivation. He continued to share his medical tribulations, revealing that he also experienced sudden leg pain that lasted for months.
At one point, while seeking answers, a doctor in New York located a piece of glass embedded in his leg, which contributed to his recurring symptoms.
Though Butler seems to have moved past much of these health concerns, he emphasized the need to ease the pressure he places on himself in his craft. With guidance from actress Laura Dern, he learned the importance of balancing work and well-being, realizing that he didn’t have to push himself to the edge to shine professionally.
Taking care of his health has become a priority for Butler. He realized that sacrificing his well-being, such as experiencing blindness after filming, isn’t worth the cost. As he continues his journey in Hollywood, Butler finds solace in reconnecting with friends and allowing himself the necessary rest.
Reflecting on his experiences, he stated, “You don’t need to destroy the light.” It’s a reminder to many that sometimes, taking a step back can be just as crucial as striving for success.
