Lakers’ Austin Reaves Delivers Late-Game Magic Against Timberwolves

Los Angeles Lakers’ Austin Reaves had a standout moment on Wednesday night as the 2025-26 season kicked off, and it came during a nail-biter against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With just over six seconds remaining, Reaves took an inbounds pass near the half-court line. After maneuvering off a pick, he drove towards the basket, reaching the foul line before launching a floater. As the buzzer sounded, the ball swooshed through the net, securing a thrilling 116-115 victory for the Lakers.

Reaves finished the game with an impressive 28 points and 16 assists, but afterward, he admitted that he “probably went a little crazy” in that exhilarating moment, reflecting on the joyous release of the victory.

Head coach JJ Redick expressed his thoughts on Reaves, saying, “I don’t really care about tiers, but I think he established himself as, well, a tough player last year. He’s definitely embraced that role.”

This win was especially significant for the injury-stricken Lakers, who are leaning heavily on Reaves this season, particularly with stars like LeBron James and Luka Doncic sidelined. Reaves, who joined the Lakers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, has been a surprising standout, sign a four-year deal before the 2023-24 season worth almost $14 million.

Earlier in the season, he scored 51 against the Sacramento Kings and had 41 in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers before sealing the Timberwolves game with that buzzer-beater.

“What’s crucial is that he’s really stepped up as a leader,” Redick noted. “That’s immense; it’s what we need from him.”

Reaves also reflected on the importance of this victory, particularly after the disappointment of last season’s playoff loss that had ended their hopes abruptly.

“It’s special to get a big win on the road, especially with so many guys out,” he mentioned. “We kept cheering each other on, and they encouraged me to keep pushing.”
